Our Story
OnlineVATCalculatorUK.co.uk was built by UK finance professionals who deal with HMRC rules every day, working with sole traders and limited companies who kept running into the same issue: tools that are slow, too complicated, overbuilt, or simply not designed for UK VAT.
We built something different. A fast, clean, always-free VAT calculator that works the way people actually think about VAT, add it, remove it, check the threshold, and move on. No registration. No subscription. No data harvesting. Just a fast tool that gives you the accurate VAT calculations.
What This Tool Does
The OnlineVATCalculatorUK.co.uk provides three distinct VAT calculation modes, all free and requiring no account:
- Standard Calculator: Add VAT to a net (ex-VAT) price or remove VAT from a gross (inc-VAT) price. Works at 20%, 5%, 0%, or any custom rate.
- Reverse VAT Calculator: Enter the VAT amount shown on an invoice and calculate the original net price and gross total. Useful for checking supplier invoices without access to the original net figure.
- Bulk VAT Calculator: Process multiple amounts in a single operation. Paste a comma-separated or line-separated list of values and get a combined VAT total instantly designed for accountants and bookkeepers processing batches of invoices.
Alongside the calculator, the site provides a VAT registration threshold checker, a complete breakdown of UK VAT rates with examples, VAT calculation formulas, VAT tips for businesses, common VAT mistakes to avoid, and a comprehensive FAQ covering the most searched VAT questions in the UK.
Who Uses This Calculator
Our calculator is used daily by a wide range of people across the UK:
- Sole traders and freelancers, particularly those billing between £70,000–£90,000 a year, who need to monitor their rolling 12-month turnover against the registration threshold without logging into accounting software every timee.
- Small business owners, particularly those on quarterly MTD (Making Tax Digital) filing cycles, who want a fast crosscheck on their VAT figures before submitting through their accounting software, without having to re-open a spreadsheet
- Contractors on limited company arrangements who need to separate net and VAT amounts on invoices quickly and accurately.
- Accountants and bookkeepers who process multiple client invoices and use the bulk calculator to speed up batch calculations.
- Retail and hospitality businesses verifying that their till totals and daily gross takings are reflecting the correct VAT figures.
- Students and recent graduates studying finance, accounting, or business, who need a reliable reference for how UK VAT actually works, beyond what a textbook formula shows them.
How We Keep It Accurate
UK VAT figures are set by HMRC and announced through the Autumn Budget and Spring Statement. When a threshold or rate change is announced as happened in April 2024, when the VAT registration threshold rose from £85,000 to £90,000 after a six-year freeze. We update the calculator and supporting content within 24 hours. We cross-reference against HMRC's VAT Notice 700, the primary published guidance for UK VAT rules.
Every calculation on this site uses the correct mathematical method: to add VAT at 20%, we multiply by 1.20; to remove VAT from a gross figure, we divide by 1.20. We explicitly warn against the most common error — dividing a gross figure by 20 — which produces a completely wrong result. Our calculator will never make that mistake.
What This Site Is Not
We are a free calculation tool and educational resource. We are not a firm of accountants, a tax adviser, or an HMRC-affiliated service. The information on this site is provided to help you understand VAT and perform accurate calculations — it does not constitute professional tax or financial advice.
VAT law is complex, and individual business circumstances vary significantly. For decisions that carry real financial or legal consequences — registering for VAT, choosing a VAT scheme, handling construction or property VAT, dealing with international supplies — you should always consult a qualified accountant or tax adviser, or contact HMRC directly.
Our Commitment
This site will always be free to use. No account, no paywall, no upsell. Our only goal is to provide the most accurate, most useful, and most clearly explained VAT tool for people in the United Kingdom.
If you spot an error, notice an outdated figure, or have a suggestion for improving the calculator or its supporting content, we genuinely want to hear from you.
